Q4 2018: Cycling the M25 Write-up

Not literally as that it illegal but following it…….

Think of the M25 and I doubt the word of inspirational springs to mind, but perhaps it should.  Coupled with the frustrations of the M4 (both roads inferior to the A303 IMHO) it was enough to inspire Chris Rea to write ‘Road to Hell’ not just a one but a two part song. More specifically Slough, itself located on just one junction of the 31 junctions in total has inspired, as well as divided many, from John Betjeman and David Brent to name just two. I was inspired myself to explore the road, starting from Slough no less heading clockwise, having heard Al Humphrey’s talking about his week long walk around it at an RGS lecture a few years ago.  I can’t have been listening very diligently though as I recently read he refers to it as a ‘monstrosity…….it sums up much of what is tedious about modern life’.

It turned out to be one of my more random weekends it’s got to be said but as it happens surprisingly enjoyable, genuinely.  Spanning 6 counties including film studios at Pinewood, cattle grids in Epping Forest, to Lakeside in West Thurrock, the 250km route had it all. And that’s before I mention the 5* shuttle service that transports cyclists (no hiking riff raff allowed apparently) over the Dartford Crossing.

A couple of pointers/thoughts/observations:

1)     For those of you who are rude about Acton chances are you won’t like Potters Bar so maybe give it a swerve

2)     If you’re thinking of setting up a golf course don’t opt for this route, they’re already a plethora of them, ditto garden centres

3)     Think wisely before becoming a driving instructor as a career, a lot have to work weekends

4)     Has the Queen ever been along Monarch’s Way in Enfield – let’s spare her that ordeal if she hasn’t, and lastly

5)     The Brits love pebbledash.
